Psychiatric sexual disorders are rooted in persistent, irrepressible mental impulses. It originates from dysfunctional conditioning and neural maladaptations. It has tolerance and dependency characteristics similar to substance use disorder. It leads to abnormal or socially untenable quests for sexual gratification or, in some cases, sexual avoidance. Lay efforts to stop it usually fail, as the person is seldom able to gain control of sexual disorders without professional rehabilitation therapy.

Sexual disorder management
Problematic sexual behaviour has numerous designations, including sexual dependency, hypersexuality, compulsive sexuality, sexual anorexia, and a host of other denominations. Informally it is often called infidelity, nymphomania, adultery, cheating, and so on. Regardless of the name calling, it remains a fact that sexual mismanagement often results in extreme tragedies that could have been prevented. It’s not a simple habit or weakness. It’s a complex condition that requires efficient psychiatric therapy.
Sexual disorder codependency
Unlike patients with substance use disorder, sexual disorder patients do not need post-treatment abstention. Psychiatric treatment can restore them to a state of healthy sexual behaviour, without limitation of normal human expressions of intimacy and pleasure. However, partners are usually also deeply affected. They can accumulate codependency symptoms and long term retention of various emotions like distrust, avoidance, shame, poor self-image and future relationship problems. They also require counseling.
Sexual disorder candidates
Sexual dysregulation is not limited to vigorous pursuit of sexual conquests. Other forms of intense activities are pornography, voyeurism, prostitution, exhibitionism, paedophilia, stalking and rape, casual sexual touching or rubbing against others – the list goes on. Conversely, it also covers self-deprivations like avoidance, evasion, aversion and fear of sex. These sprout from an array of disincentives ranging from emotional indifference to rape. All these conditions are candidates for therapeutic healing.
Sexual highs and lies
Problematic sexual behaviour shares some characteristics with substance use disorder. It includes reward seeking, deficient coping mechanisms, avoidance strategies, secrecy or concealment, preoccupation, interpersonal conflict, social condemnation, conflicts with other activities, tolerance, dependency, cravings, relapse and potential suicide.
Research has also shown strong links between childhood trauma and sexual disorders in adulthood, another commonality with substance use disorder. Sexual dysregulation can actually be accompanied by comorbidities such as drug and alcohol disorders, mood swings, anxiety and depression, as all these anomalies are stimulated by the same maladaptive neural incentives.
Sexual disorders do, however, have some unique distinctions: its focus is on non-substance related activities; its escape mechanisms lean towards arousals, thrill seeking, fantasies and egotism; there is a primary insensitivity regarding the dignity, respect and feelings of other people, and a lack of bonding or intimacy with sexual partners.
There are some who blindly argue that behaviour problems are overstated by some industries to scare and exploit sufferers for commercial gain, but frequent reports of real life tragedies prove that the danger is real. When you start scratching under the surface of sexual disorders, you realise how complex it is and how difficult it would be to overcome it with simple willpower or other self-help methods.
There are several treatment options. Some medications suppress the stimuli, but this is not an ideal solution and should be reserved for extreme situations. Virtual reality is a new concept using electronic 3D devices to treat patients, but it has various suitability limitations.
Combinations of personal cognitive analyses and individualised treatment therapies offer the most comprehensive and lasting solutions for identification and restoration of the psyche and prevention of relapses. In official, judicial, clinical and medical health circles it is widely accepted as the best option.
